We tested two devices from WD- the MyCloud and the nifty little wireless My Passport. WD is trying to grow and doesn’t mind taking risk. That’s something that we already know since MyNet routers and the Black². WD My Passport Wireless does have its benefits, especially with the portable battery and the SD card with an option of either copying or moving files to the drive. Though the drive is thicker (understandably due to PCB and battery along with SD Card holder), it mains the same form factor that 2.5″ drives usually hold
WD My Cloud EX2, on the other hand, is a two-bay NAS unit. This is coming from a manufacturer that was the first to put out a consumer version of NAS specialized drives- the Red and the Red Pro series. I really like NAS units, but I really wish ethernet controller makers start producing low-cost 10Gbit ethernet ports. We’re stuck with 1Gbit for a very VERY long time and it’s long overdue. In a time with USB 3.0 will be soon to be succeeded by USB 3.1, it looks strange that LAN speed is lagging behind. It’s essential, especially for having large wireless via a hardwired connection.
In any case, let’s see how good this unit performs.
