Seagate’s unit is a 3.5″ drive which capacity storage of up to 4TB which can store up to 480 hours of HD content. Seagate assured that they’ve designed the drive for surveillance applications where they’ve used rotational vibration (RV) sensors which can be proven reliable in systems with up to 16 stacked drives, typical setups found for small to medium businesses for casinos, hotels, manufacturing plans and other places where HD recording video analysis applications will be required from time-to-time.

Seagate also assures that this drive supports up to 32 channels can easily handle higher write workload. It also allows installers to customize power settings and has better support for motion-activated cameras. The drive can specifically spin down when the motion cameras pick up no activity, but can quickly power up once any activity is detected. This way power-saving is done when its not needed and no frame is missed once the motion-sensing camera is triggered.

WD’s purple drive seems to be made for home and small business use as it can work with systems using up to 8 hard drives and up to 32 high defination cameras. The storage device options are between 1TB and 4TB.

WD purple is designed for 8 hours of daily operations. Its also optimized for always-on PVR, DVR AND NVR environments.

The specific features are as follows:
AllFrame™ – When combined with ATA streaming support, AllFrame™ technology helps to reduce video footage loss with a proprietary cache policy management technology to help improve data flow and playback. WD Purple includes exclusive firmware upgrades that protect against video pixilation and interruptions within a surveillance system
Advanced Format Technology™ (AFT) – the more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities, adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers to continue growing hard drive capacities

As far as sales of these units are concerned, Seagate didn’t give any MSRP list yet, but WD Purple 1TB WDPUR10RX is Rs. 6,550/-, 2TB WDPUR20X is Rs. 9,500/-, 3TB WDPUR30RX for Rs. 12,650 and 4TB WDPUR40X’s MSRP is Rs. 18,150. Seagate also didn’t mention the warranty period, but WD is offering 3 years.

Though both drives are for surveillance purposes, WD is more for home and small business as they wouldn’t use as many cameras as hotels, casinos or manufacturing plants would- which should be taken care of by Seagate’ Surveillance HDD.
